Skilled worker shortage – Problems occupying open posts
More and more companies are struggling to find qualified professionals
This is a problem that can inhibit economic growth. While the study results in Germany report 260,000 job vacancies due to lack of skilled workers, the demand for skilled workers in domestic companies is 160,000.
The current survey commissioned by the WKÖ clearly shows in which branches there is a lack of specialized personnel: in industry. Of the 60,000 job vacancies, 10,000 are vacancies for highly qualified IT specialists.
What has led to the decline in labor supply?
On the one hand, the baby-boomer generation, today 40- to 60-year-olds, were followed by a low-birthrate. On the other hand, young people tend to be more interested in humanities rather than science and technology. So, not only learned skills, but also human strength and the desire for further education are in demand, mainly due to on-going digitization.
