Tax number for Germany

Why do subcontractors need a tax number when working in Germany?

If a foreign company (a company that does not have a registered office, a management or a branch office in Germany) carries out sales in Germany, these are – as with domestic companies – subject to sales tax.

In other words, a foreign company which does not have a registered office in Germany has to pay the sales tax to the German tax office for the turnover taxable income in Germany.

Where do you get the tax number for Germany?

In order to obtain a German tax number, foreign companies must register with the relevant German tax office, which is responsible for their country, for VAT purposes. An informal notification to the competent tax office about the commencement of business activities in Germany is enough for the application. Included in this, is an employer certificate, if necessary, a copy of the commercial register, as well as information on the business`s bank accounts.

You will then be sent a form in which you need to enter your personal and company-related data. After you have returned the completed form to the tax office, you will usually receive your tax number for Germany within one to two weeks.
